Is apple gaining back its popularity among Architects?

Apple for Architects

Is a computer important to Architects?

Working as an architect or designer requires access to the best resources and platforms for generating superior-quality work. The profession is demanding and entails architects working on multiple visualisation. Also, project management software to provide the outcome that meets the client’s needs. They spend much time in front of laptop screens, observing and seeking ideas on the internet. Further, architects often work simultaneously on various software to experiment with their designs and collaborate with a global team. They could use 27-inch iMacs or the new Mac Minis with multiple large screens. Computer selection is critical for success. Is apple gaining back its popularity among architects?

Is hardware dictated by software?

The best laptops for designers must be compatible with software such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Blender, Revit, AutoCAD, 3Ds Max, Grasshopper, and SketchUp. Each software is unique and contributes tremendously at various stages in design development. Hence, architectural designers need high-quality laptops that efficiently store multiple software and functions. These laptops need to be high configuration, and have excellent battery life. Screen quality is important for health. It is also important for producing realistic views of drawings, renders, and models.

While selecting the right laptop for themselves, architects often get involved in the debate of Windows v/s Mac. While both operating systems are the best in class, Windows is preferable for its pocket-friendliness, flexibility, and software integration.

Is Apple the best computer?

With MacBook Pro, Apple leaped its general performance with the Max chip. As one of the best laptops for architectural designers. It has excellent processing hardware ranging from 10-core CPU to 32-core CPU. This 16-inch MacBook Pro has a stunning Liquid Retina XDR display with 64GM RAM and 8TB SSD. This allows you to view and store high-quality visuals. Its battery is touted to last 21 hours, with typical daily usage. This laptop can run heavy design software like BIM. With this laptop, you can experience a 1080p HD camera, and a six-speaker audio system. A high-quality microphone to help you collaborate. So Architects would want to use a design-based computer? Is apple gaining back its popularity among architects due to the performance of its computers and screens?

Is software stopping Apple from gaining back its popularity among architects?

Three popular pieces of software aren’t available on a Mac: Revit, Microstation, and 3ds Max.

Revit (Autodesk)

Revit is a 3D modeling program and is widely used by architects around the world. It is a building information modeling (BIM) software used throughout all design phases. Allowing for collaboration between architects and other disciplines, such as engineers.

Revit is very popular worldwide, especially in larger practices.

Microstation (Bentley)

Like Revit, Microstation is a BIM software package architects and engineers use.

Less used by Architects than Revit. It is commonly used for large-scale infrastructure projects such as train stations and airports. It can be popular with Design practices.

3ds Max

3ds Max is also a 3D modeling program. However, it is more commonly used by architects to create visualizations and animations of their designs.

Other Software

The 3D software Rhino is available for Mac, but there are currently 51 commands which are not featured on the Mac version. You can see a list of these commands here.

The rendering software V-Ray is available for some Mac software but not for Rhino.

Alternatives Software helping apple gaining back its popularity among architects?

Although the software mentioned above is popular in architecture, many alternatives do the same thing.

ArchiCAD and Vectorworks are two alternatives to Revit and Microstation. Many new software offerings are entering the market. Especially in the rendering and visualisation area that can work with BIM programs.

Cost of the Apple products

Some people prefer how Macs are designed or love the Apple ecosystem (see below), but there is no escaping the fact that PCs cost less.

One reason why some people are willing to pay the extra money for a MacBook is the high build quality and beautiful design. Apple’s laptops have an entire metal body and look and feel great. With minimal plastic components, they are very durable and unlikely to be damaged by day-to-day use.

The build quality of other laptops has improved dramatically over the last few years, with a significant rise in the number of machines with metal bodies. You could see the computer in-store to check your build quality.

Security

It is viewed that Macs are safer than PCs because there are fewer viruses designed to attack them. This is because around 75% of the world’s computers are PCs. Hence, hackers and cyber-criminals see less value in attacking Macs.

What would you choose?

Both Mac and PC are viable options for architecture. You need to figure out what your requirements and budget are and make a decision based on that. We love using a MacBook Pro at work; the build quality is fantastic, the performance is good, and it’s just a lovely piece of design.

Editors Note

We chose the Apple ecosystem from the beginning of our Architecture story in 2008. We mitigated the cost factor by buying Apple secondhand from Computer Exchange (CEX). They do a two-year warranty. What is the true cost of Microsoft? I witnessed firsthand very big overheads for IT support in medium-sized practices. By running Apple servers (mac minis) we avoided this big cost. So I would argue that Apple is not more expensive.

It’s true that Autodesk and Microstation stopped supporting Apple when Apple where in the dark years. But Archicad is cross plateform. So we ran PC and Mac computers from Mac servers. Staff could choose PC/Mac. Do you ask your staff?

Cyber Security is always a worry and it seems to be getting worse. Apple has less of a problem due to being fewer of them and their ecosystem is very tight, so it naturally makes sense that a would-be hacker would put more effort into the bigger market of the PC/ Microsoft.

Do designers prefer Apple, I think so, but it’s maybe not Architects. Its Video Editors, Graphics. Architects maybe trapped by Autodesk. The directors that chose the software often do not use it. Also its legacy, the industry is so in bed with Autodesk that a break up would take an AI wonder product.

So is apple gaining back its popularity among architects? Maybe it’s creeping back due to younger practices adopting BIM and then that’s the time to choose Autodesk or cross-platform Archicad or something else.
